Aaron Blabey talks about his work

Aaron Blabey is my idol.  If there is one person in the world I wish I was it would be him.  He is one very talented guy who creates some of the funniest books for kids.  He can write and illustrate stories for all ages and in different forms, whether it’s picture books like Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas or novels for older readers like The Bad Guys.

I found this wonderful video on YouTube of Aaron Blabey talking about his work with the brilliant people at Story Box Library.  Watch it and find out about the magic behind Aaron’s stories.

John Boyne introduces The Boy at the Top of the Mountain

The Boy at the Top of the Mountain is the new book from John Boyne, author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Stay Where You Are And Then Leave.  I love John’s writing for both younger and older readers and I am especially excited to read his now book.  Here is John Boyne introducing the book and reading an extract and talking about his World War Two novels:

When Pierrot becomes an orphan, he must leave his home in Paris for a new life with his Aunt Beatrix, a servant in a wealthy household at the top of the German mountains. But this is no ordinary time, for it is 1935 and the Second World War is fast approaching; and this is no ordinary house, for this is the Berghof, the home of Adolf Hitler.

Quickly, Pierrot is taken under Hitler’s wing, and is thrown into an increasingly dangerous new world: a world of terror, secrets and betrayal, from which he may never be able to escape.

The Boy at the Top of the Mountain is available now in NZ from Penguin Random House NZ.

Katherine Rundell on The Wolf Wilder

The Wolf Wilder is a wonderful new book by Katherine Rundell.  I’ve been hearing lots of good things about this book and I can’t wait to lose myself in the story.

Feodora and her mother live in the snowbound woods of Russia, in a house full of food and fireplaces. Ten minutes away, in a ruined chapel, lives a pack of wolves. Feodora’s mother is a wolf wilder, and Feo is a wolf wilder in training. A wolf wilder is the opposite of an animal tamer: it is a person who teaches tamed animals to fend for themselves, and to fight and to run, and to be wary of humans.

When the murderous hostility of the Russian Army threatens her very existence, Feo is left with no option but to go on the run. What follows is a story of revolution and adventure, about standing up for the things you love and fighting back. And, of course, wolves.

Michael Rosen performs poems from A Great Big Cuddle

Michael Rosen and Chris Riddell have teamed up to publish a collection of wonderful poems for young children, called A Great Big Cuddle.  It’s a big, beautiful book full of Michael Rosen’s poems and illustrated by Chris Riddell.  It’s out now from Walker Books.

Check out these great videos of Michael Rosen performing some of his poems from A Great Big Cuddle.  I love his poems but seeing him perform them is terrific.  He’s got a fascinating face that is incredibly animated when he performs.

Aaron Blabey reads Thelma the Unicorn

Aaron Blabey is one of my favourite picture book author/illustrators.  Not only his is text a delight to read aloud but his stories are full of humour and silliness.  His illustrations are absolutely hilarious too (I especially love his illustrations for his Pig the Pug books).  Thelma the Unicorn is Aaron’s latest picture book and it’s absolutely terrific!  Check out this cool video of Aaron reading Thelma the Unicorn and you can also watch the book trailer for his new series coming from Scholastic in August, The Bad Guys, right here on the blog.

How to draw Timmy Failure with Stephan Pastis

Stephan Pastis’ Timmy Failure series is one of my absolute favourites!  I’ve read them to my sons and they love them and they’re always a hit when I booktalk them.  The books are hilarious, from the clueless Timmy and his weird and wonderful friends, to the fantastic illustrations that add so much humour.  You can read my review of Mistakes Were Made and  Now Look What You’ve Done, here on my blog.

Check out these cool videos of Stephan Pastis showing us how to draw Timmy Failure and some of the other characters from the series:
