If you’ve read my review you know that I LOVE The Only and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. I want to spread the love so I’m giving away 2 hardback copies of this wonderful book.
To get in the draw, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post (along with your name and email address) telling me a fact about Silverback Gorillas. You could either tell me your fact or you could post a link to an interesting Silverback Gorilla video on YouTube. Competition closes Friday 10 February, 2012.
This competition is now closed. Congratulations to Sandra and Anita.
Gorillas are very intelligent, and they share with us a full range of emotions: love, hate, fear, grief, joy, greed, generosity, pride, shame, empathy, and jealousy. They laugh when they are tickled and cry when they are sad or hurt. Gorillas cry with sounds, not tears according to the website: http://koko.org/kidsclub/learn/10facts.html?gclid=COjfhM-M-60CFch56wodyxjROg
When a group is attacked by predators such as humans, leopards or other gorillas, the silver back male will protect the group to the extent of sacrificing his own life.

awesome giveaway!
When they are born gorillas weigh about 1.4kg-1.8kg (about half the weight of a newborn human baby). When they are fully grown female gorillas are about 1.4m tall and weigh about 90kg, adult males (silverbacks) are taller, about 1.7m tall and weigh about 180kg – twice as much as the females.
[That means silverbacks are about as tall as I am and almost three times as heavy!]

The silverback is the chief leader and protector of the group, to whom all group members defer. He decides when and where to forage, rest and sleep, arbitrates disputes among his family members and protects them from rival silverbacks or human predators
